Rhinoplasty

Correcting Form and Function of the Nose

A Rhinoplasty (also called a nose job) is a surgical procedure performed on the nose to alter its shape or improve its function. The time and cost of a nose correction can vary greatly. In some cases, injections with fillers are sufficient. In others, several surgical methods are performed under general anesthesia.

Rhinoplasty Methods

There is a wide variety of methods used in rhinoplasty, as the aesthetics of a nose are relatively complex, and even the smallest asymmetries can lead to an appearance perceived as irritating by the affected person. Rhinoplasty includes both functional and aesthetic approaches.

Nose tip correction

Nose tip correction and is a relatively minor but powerful procedure. It is often combined with other procedures. Among other things, tip correction is used in corrections of the following malformed noses:

  • Hump noses

  • Long noses

  • Big noses

  • Broad noses (so-called boxer noses)

Septorhinoplasty

A surprising number of people suffer from a deviated septum, sometimes accompanied by narrowing of the nasal passages. This condition leads to chronic dry mouth, increased snoring, decreased exercise tolerance, and an overall decreased quality of life. Septorhinoplasty is an effective method of opening the nasal passages by straightening the nasal septum, which can be performed with or without external changes to the nose. Sometimes septorhinoplasty is also used for aesthetic corrections, for example to correct a crooked nose.

Nasal hump ablation

Nose hump ablation is a purely aesthetic correction. Even slightly elevated nasal humps may significantly affect the aesthetics of the face. To remove nasal humps, it is usually combined with a hyaluronic gel injection to raise the bridge of the nose above the hump. The tip of the nose is also sometimes corrected to ensure aesthetic proportions and a harmonious overall appearance.

Nose reduction

Some people suffer from a larger than average nose, where the entire nasal area is disproportionately overdeveloped In order to reduce the overall size of the nose, several procedures are necessary. In the course of this treatment, the following corrections, among others, are performed:

  • Nose length correction
  • Nose wing correction
  • Cusp nose correction
  • Nose tip correction

Narrowing of the nose

Some patients just have a very wide-shaped nose tip. In this case, a nose narrowing and a nose tip correction can be performed.

Nasal wing correction

Some people have nostrils that are either too small, too large, or asymmetrical:

  • Small nostrils can be just as noticeable as large nostrils because they disrupt the balance and symmetry of the nose.

  • When nostrils are too prominent, they can distract attention from other facial features.

  • Nostrils that are unevenly shaped or unevenly sized can be a cosmetic concern.

A nasal wing correction can be performed in an open or closed procedure. In a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils. In an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made along the wing of the nose, which gives the rhinoplasty surgeons better access to the structures of the nose.

Rhinoplasty with hyaluronic acid

In many procedures, the surgeon can perform hyaluronic injections. This cosmetic procedure is minimally invasive and can already significantly change the appearance. Volume can be built up, proportions can be straightened, nasal humps can be eliminated and the general asymmetry of a nose can be corrected.

When is hyaluronic acid used?

  • Correcting a saddle nose: When injecting with hyaluronic acid, the "saddle" above the hump of the nose is lifted.

  • Correcting a nose hump: The upper bridge of the nose is lifted with hyaluronic acid.

  • Correcting flat nose tip: The drooping nose tip can be lifted with hyaluronic acid by building up volume on the upper side.

  • Correcting an asymmetrical nasal tip: The majority of asymmetries (except in particularly severe cases) can be corrected with hyaluronic gel by adding volume to different areas of the "weaker" side.

Suitable patients for rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can be either a surgical or non-surgical procedure, and can be performed for both cosmetic or functional reasons. Whether or not a rhinoplasty should be performed depends on your individual needs and goals. Functional reasons may include correcting a deviated septum for breathing problems or repairing a broken nose.

Rhinoplasty is an important individual decision, and the procedure is carefully tailored for each patient.

These are the ideal conditions for a patient who wants to undergo rhinoplasty:

  • Age: Younger patients can undergo rhinoplasty, but we recommend that patients be at least in their late teens or adulthood. It is also best to perform the procedure when the growth of the skeleton and soft tissues of the face is complete, which is usually after the age of 16.

  • The right attitude: Patients who have realistic cosmetic and aesthetic goals and have already studied the subject in a more sophisticated way will have an easier time with the decision.

  • Cosmetic or functional dissatisfaction: This includes patients who are dissatisfied with the overall appearance or shape of their nose and know exactly what changes they want to have made, or patients who want surgery to correct functional problems.

  • Good overall health: Patients who do not suffer from any serious complaints or diseases.

Cost of the procedure

Most rhinoplasties are purely aesthetic measures that are not covered by health insurance and must therefore be paid for by patients themselves. However, if the corrections are functional (e.g. in case of breathing problems when the lips are closed), the costs may be covered by health insurance.

The following table provides a rough overview of the costs to be expected for different rhinoplasties

  • Initial consultation

    100 CHF

  • Rhinoplasty with filler (hyaluronic acid gel)

    550+ CHF

  • Functional rhinoplasty

    7'500+ CHF

  • Aesthetic rhinoplasty

    9'000+ CHF

  • Reconstructive rhinoplasty

    15'000+ CHF

Patients with diabetes, heart problems, bleeding disorders, lung diseases or high blood pressure should consult their doctor first, especially if they want a surgical nose correction.
