Liposuction

A Proven Procedure Against Fat Deposits and Lipedema

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure to remove fat from the body. It can be used to treat areas of the body with excess fat. Sometimes liposuction is also used to treat lipedema, a condition with abnormal fat accumulation in the limbs.

Duration and procedure of liposuction

The operating duration is typically between 1 and 3 hours and depends on the amount of fat to be suctioned and the chosen treatment method. The procedure can be performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis. The entire treatment procedure includes the following steps.

Step 1: Consultation

It is important to have a careful discussion with your doctor about your surgery and follow his or her professional recommendations to reduce the risk of complications. This includes avoiding blood thinning medications and abstaining from alcohol and nicotine in the weeks leading up to your surgery. The doctor will answer all your questions about the operation in detail.

Step 2: Marking

The affected areas are marked with a pen by our specialist, disinfected, and covered.

Step 3: Anesthesia

The type of anesthesia used during surgery depends on several factors. Local anesthesia numbs a specific area, while intravenous sedation helps you relax, and general anesthesia puts you to sleep. Your doctor will recommend the best option for you.

Step 4: Incisions

The surgeon makes small incisions in the areas of your body where there is excess fat. The incisions are usually extremely small. An experienced surgeon will take care to place the incisions so that the scarring is as inconspicuous as possible.

Step 5: Destruction and suction of the fat cells

This step depends strongly on the chosen treatment procedure. There are several different types of liposuction as explained below.

Different types of liposuction

Tumescent liposuction (TLA)

The most common form of liposuction is the tumescent liposuction. In this procedure, the surgeon injects a sterile solution into the treatment area. The solution contains:

  • a saline solution to help remove body fat

  • an anesthetic to relieve any pain

  • a drug that constricts the blood vessels in this area

The injection of the solution causes the treatment area to swell and stiffen slightly. Your surgeon will then make a few small incisions in the skin and insert a very small tube (cannula) under the skin. The cannula is connected to a vacuum that sucks the fat out of the treatment area.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL)

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction is a procedure that can be undergone alone or in combination with the tumescent liposuction mentioned above. It involves making a small incision and then inserting a metal rod under the skin. This metal rod emits ultrasound energy, which helps to break down the walls of the fat cells and split the fat in the treatment area. This makes it easier to remove the fat cells. The broken cells are then suctioned out.

Laser-assisted Liposuction / Smartlipo (LAL)

Laser-assisted liposuction uses a high-intensity laser to break down fat cells, so they can be removed more easily. To do this, a small incision is made, and a small laser fiber is inserted under the skin. The laser fiber breaks down the fat cells, which are then suctioned out through a cannula.

Power-assisted liposuction (PAL)

A power-assisted liposuction is a form of liposuction in which a powered cannula vibrates rapidly back and forth under the skin. This vibration makes the technique faster and more efficient and often causes less pain and swelling than other types of liposuction. PAL is often used for full body liposuction or when large amounts of fat need to be removed.

Water-jet assisted liposuction (WAL)

This liposuction is a modern technique that uses small jets of water to loosen and detach fat cells, which are then suctioned and removed. This procedure can be used to treat lipedema, a condition characterized by excess fat tissue.

Body parts suitable for liposuction

Liposuction of the legs (especially liposuction of the thigh) and the abdomen is particularly common, where the rolls of fat at the waist are suctioned away. The results of liposuction of abdominal fat often match the slim contours that many people desire. However, there are many other areas on the body where liposuction can be performed, such as:

  • Back

  • Upper arms

  • Face

  • Thigh

  • Chest

  • Lower leg

  • Buttocks

  • Hips

Liposuction vs. tummy tuck

Both treatments aim to achieve a slimmer appearance, but in different ways. A tummy tuck (also called abominoplasty) is a more complex and invasive procedure that involves removing excess fatty tissue and lower abdominal skin, and tightening the abdominal muscles if necessary. In addition, the doctor will need to stitch the abdomen together and usually create a new space for the belly button. Sometimes an abdominoplasty with liposuction is also performed to correct unsightly "dog ears".

Safety and risks of liposuction

Like any surgical procedure, liposuction carries certain risks, but these are significantly lower when the procedure is performed by an experienced, qualified surgeon. It is essential that you seek information and advice from a professional specialist. Schedule an appointment at sweet skin.

Risk of complications

Another problem that can occur with liposuction is the saline solution that is used to loosen and break up the fat cells. When this solution is removed, there can be a sudden drop in blood pressure due to the loss of fluid. It is important that a qualified doctor is on hand to replace this fluid quickly.

Infection is a rare side effect of liposuction, but possible. This is usually due to lower hygiene standards in the hospital and poor aftercare. However, with liposuction in Switzerland, the risk of infection is significantly lower due to stricter hygiene regulations and higher aftercare standards.

Recovery time

Normally you will be able to socialize and work again 1-2 days later. After a few days, you can also do sports again. Generally, people feel better and more like themselves again within one to two weeks after the operation.

Scarring during liposuction

Liposuction scars are caused by the small incisions required to insert the very fine cannulas for fat removal. These are typically very small, so liposuction scars are also usually minimal. Our specialist is experienced in making as few incisions as possible to avoid unnecessary trauma and scarring at the incision site.

Pain

After the procedure is completed, you may experience some pain, swelling, and bruising. However, you will not feel any pain during the procedure as you will be under local or general anesthetic.

Permanence of the achieved results

The results obtained with liposuction can be permanent. This depends to a large extent on the patient's willingness to maintain a healthy lifestyle. If one eats an unhealthy diet and leads a sedentary lifestyle after the operation, fat will possibly accumulate again.
